Our visit to Manderscheid and the two castles.
3 July 2006
We parked in the village of Manderscheid and took the path down to the two castles.
The first castle you see from the path.

This castle is first historically mentioned in 973 and belonged to the Trier principality for many centuries.

The second castle (and larger of the two) viewed from the path.

The lower castle's existence was first documented in 1133.  The larger castle along with it's fortified valley settlement had strong ties to the duchy of Luxemburg.

The two castles were enemies for many centuries.

The front side of the castle viewed from the restaurant we had lunch at.

Looking back down at where we just had lunch.

A view of the bridge and shallow river we crossed earlier.

Looking back down at the castle from the top.

A non-zoomed photo to show how close the other castle is.

A good place to rest and enjoy the view.

A window view of the neighboring castle.
